Dr Carmel O’Brien
Dr Carmel O’Brien, a graduate of TCD, is a general practitioner with 37 years of service to dentistry. She has worked as an associate, a locum health board dentist, a graduate student, a practice owner and as part of a multidisciplinary team with a focus on providing preventive and conservative dental care to patients with special needs – including treatment in a hospital setting under General Anaesthesia. She spent two years at the University of Minnesota, USA completing both a General Practice Residency and an Advanced Education in General Dentistry.
She established her own practice in Connemara in 2000, selling it as a successful business to her associate in 2005 in order to focus on raising her family. She continued to work part-time in this practice and subsequently in a busy Galway City Practice. For the last 10 years she has worked as part of the team of O’Brien Molloy and Delaney at 7b Dock Road and in the Galway Clinic as a GDP focusing on the needs of patients with medical complications and disabilities.
She is a firm believer in the importance of diet, good oral hygiene and the rights of all patients to optimum oral healthcare. She recognises the importance of evidence- based treatment as a core guiding principle and embraces the benefits of new advances and technologies in her practice. She is committed to the provision a of a high standard of dental care in Ireland, both public and private, delivered by properly qualified dentists and regulated by a well-informed Dental Council.
She maintains a keen interest in Continuing Professional Development and recognises the benefit of attending professional conferences and meetings. She strongly advocates that dentists in Ireland should be the national leaders in ensuring good oral health for its citizens and is outspoken on this principle.
