Dr Philip Mulholland

Having completed my undergraduate training in Dublin Dental Hospital in 2010 I moved to the UK where I completed my vocational training through the London Deanery Eastman. Following this I worked in both private and NHS practices where I worked with patients of different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds providing all aspects of clinical dentistry.  It was during this time while working with NHS Wandsworth London that my interest in Community dentistry developed and led me to accept a position in the Community Dental Health Service in Northern Scotland.

While here my interest deepened and I returned home in 2015 to take up a position within the HSE, where I have continued to work since then. Dedicated to delivering high-quality, evidence-based patient care in a safe clinical environment, I pursued further education, completing master’s programmes in Healthcare Management at RCSI and in the Management of Healthcare-Associated Infections at Trinity College Dublin.

In my current role as Principal Dental Surgeon HSE and through active participation in the Irish Dental Association, I am acutely aware of the current pressures and upcoming challenges faced by the profession, many posed by the looming implementation of the new national oral health policy. The need to review undergraduate training, the enhanced role and updated scope of practice of dental auxiliaries, implementation of compulsory CPD, need to update IDC guidance documents and further strengthening legislative processes around professional registrations are but  a few of the issues facing the profession in the coming term.

I feel passionately about protecting both patients and the dental profession in Ireland by safeguarding patient and clinician confidence in the Irish Dental Council.
