The Dental Council made a submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health regarding the challenges facing dentistry in Ireland. This was a broad invitation and it was the first time the council’s opinion was sought on a range of topics concerning regulation and some wider questions in the dental sector. The topics covered in the council’s letter include:
- Illegal practice and strengthening dental regulation
- Ways to address the workforce shortages and how Ireland does not train enough dentists
- Potential risks for dental training providers
- Non surgical cosmetic procedures and dentistry
- How Ireland has outsourced orthodontic training to the UK
