Dentists with Refugee or Temporary Protection Status

If you qualified outside of the EU and do not have refugee status or temporary protection in Ireland, your pathway to registration is the Dental Council Examination.

Mentorship Programme

When you apply for registration through this pathway, you may be required to undertake a period of adaptation (PoA).

A PoA is a specified amount of time given to applicants who have not met all the Dental Council registration requirements at the time of application.

The purpose of a PoA is to give a dentist, whose education and training are up to the standards of Irish and EU graduates, an opportunity to meet all the Dental Council registration requirements and ultimately obtain full and unrestricted registration.

The Dental Council may offer you a PoA to meet our language proficiency requirements. However, you must have a sufficient level of English to communicate with the registration department when applying for registration.

If you have been offered a PoA or you’re interested in becoming a mentor you will find all the details you need in our Mentorship Programme Guide.

The Dental Council advises all potential mentors and mentees to read our guide in full to get a complete understanding of our Mentorship Programme.

Looking after your mental health is important!

The Practitioner Health Matters Programme in Ireland is a non-for-profit organisation.

“Practitioners can go through difficult periods in their lives and may experience stress, burnout, depression, anxiety or other conditions such as alcohol or drug misuse. Seeking confidential medical help is the most appropriate way to deal with these conditions.”

You will find more information on their website: HOW CAN WE HELP? – Practitioner Health
